Sun Festival for Children is a new concept for giving children education in art, design and environmental knowledge by cross artistic and scientific work shops. The idea is to offer a fresh view to look at the environment nearby as a part of the world and to let children create their own toys, surroundings and the other artifacts needed when playing with materials. Children will get the idea of creating and designing through inspiring materials, cultural influences and social contacts. Sensitivity for environment and aesthetics develops by encouraging their natural interest in nature and handwork. The workshops are organized by a multi-professional team including designers, artists, gardeners and scientists.
Use of materials in Sun Festival for Children is based on seasonal cycles. This seasonal rhythm follows a book written by felt artist Tuula Nikulainen and textile artist Annika Tavasti. The book was based on an old working calendar and the idea of environmental hand craft by Nikulainen. Cultural and social importance of hand craft activities by children became apparent during a project carried out by Annika Tavasti with Phil Doc and drama pedagogi Heli Aaltonen. They have held work shops for schools and international summer camps for children.
Sun Festival for Children was organized for the first in time 2004 as part of an ecological art exhibition. In both events there was an idea of four Es; Ecology, Esthetics, Ethics and Energy. In the beginning what was planned as a small costume workshop grew rapidly to an annual festival. Need for an ecological view in design education for children and a dialog between different disciplines proved real. The organizing team started to develop a general method. The principals in practice have been tested also in other festivals, exhibitions and concerts. With help of Ministry of Environment, the principals and ideas are now being collected in to a book.
For families Sun Festival offers a joyful adventure in to colors, forms and senses. Materials from nature and recycling give experience different from everyday life, even if most of them can be observed in one’s home yard. Cross-artistic and -scientific workshops arise questions in children and give them social skills. Adults just offer the materials and tools for observation. Children are given time and space to play with materials. Children learn to respect their own ideas, environment and body. All this is needed for becoming a healthy wholesome human being with a knowledge he/she a is designer of his/her own life by creations and choices he/she makes. For the organizers Sun Festival for Children is an irreplaceable laboratory to test their ideas and to give a new view and inspiration to their work.
Old basic skills as wood carving, basket weaving, sowing, knot tying and felting helps to understand constructions and the material world in general. The techniques used are also a link between generations and cultures. A varied range of materials expands aesthetical knowledge and understanding. Festivals are free, and as much as possible, organized by volunteer workers. The atmosphere there is loving and sharing. The children teach each other and the parents can join their play of materials. The events are organized with a low budget and the materials are free. It is all about the attitude.
